How to Apply & Audition

Students are invited to audition upon receiving a recommendation from a music teacher, which can be a school band teacher, a private music instructor, or professional music educator who is aware of the student’s level of musicianship and potential for success in the program.

Once we receive the recommendation, students will be invited to fill out and return an application form which is due Wednesday, September 25 at 5 p.m. Once applications are processed, students will receive an audition time for Sunday, September 29. Students are notified of audition results within a week after auditions are held. Accepted students will receive a letter of expectations. Payment for the program is due before the first rehearsal on Sunday, October 20, 2019.


Teachers can send recommendations via email or written letter and should include the student’s contact information, instrument, grade, and school. (If the student is home-schooled, they should be participating in a school-based program or comparable ensemble experience). Send recommendations to:

Auditions are 10 minutes long and students should be prepared to play:

    • A solo or etude that demonstrates their musicianship and technical facility through contrasting tempos and styles (no more than five minutes; no accompanist necessary). Percussionists should prepare one solo/etude of their choosing which can include mallet instruments (vibes, xylophone, or marimba); timpani; and/or snare drum.
    • Two major scales up to five flats or sharps (judge’s choice) and a chromatic scale
    • Sight reading excerpt (provided by judge)
    • Musical excerpts for their instrument (provided below)
